El Barco , Boulevard Brown, Punta Cuevas (tel 02965/451965). Out near the statue of El Indio, this is an excellent retreat for a romantic seafood dinner: a meal with wine will cost $15-20 per head, and there are delicious paellas and a mixed seafood grill ($25) that will feed three. No surcharge on Visa and Mastercard. Remise taxi $4 from centre, or take colectivo #2 from the plaza to within five minutes' walk.

Cafe de la Ciudad , 28 de Julio and 25 de Mayo (tel 02965/455783). Large portions of affordable pasta and meat ($5-7) or a good-value menu del dia for $5, served in a fun, unpretentious cafe popular with the locals.

La Cheminee , Moreno 60 (tel 02965/454900). Try the excellent conejo (rabbit) in a creamy sauce ($16).

Don Ramon , opposite the bus terminal (tel 02965/472202). A reasonably priced rotiseria and bakery, selling portions of ready-made food ($4-8).

Estela , Roque Saenz Pena 27 (tel 02965/451573). Prepares a juicy parrilla mixed grill for two ($20). Closed Mon.

Patio del Asado , Mitre 868 (tel 02965/455868). Meaty tenedor libre and fixed menus for $7.

Taska Beltza , 9 de Julio 345 (tel 02965/1566-8085). Unquestionably the best seafood restaurant in town, with reasonable prices. Ask for the daily special cooked by El Negro, the chef, or sample a few Basque tapas, followed by a mouthwatering merluza (hake) and washed down with a chilled Chablis; $10-20 a head.

Tentempie , Gales 191 (tel 02965/455384). Decent pizzas from $4.
