The new international airport , Malvinas Argentinas, is 4km southwest of town; there's no public transport to the city, and a taxi to the centre costs $5. Buses arrive and depart from their companies' respective offices: LAder, from Gobernador Paz 921 (tel 02901/436421); Tolkeyen, from MaipA? 237 (tel 02901/427354); and Techni Austral outside its office at 25 de Mayo 50 in the morning, and outside the Hotel Beagle half a block away in the afternoon (tel 02901/423396).

Avenida San MartAn, the main commercial street, runs parallel to the seafront avenue, Avenida MaipA?, one block back from it up the hill. At no. 674 you'll find the tourist office (Easter to Oct Mon-Fri 8am-9pm, Sat & Sun 9am-7pm; Nov to Easter Mon-Fri 8am-midnight, Sat & Sun 9am-11pm; tel 02901/432000, fax 424550; free local information line tel 0800/3331476; muniush@tierradelfuego.ml.org ). Its well-informed, friendly staff speak English. They have an excellent free illustrated guide to the region that is of souvenir quality, a useful leaflet on walks in the area, and will help you find accommodation, even arranging to put you up with families where all else fails in high season. Two other small information kiosks operate in summer: one at the port, whose opening hours coincide with the arrival of cruise ships (Dec to mid-March); and another at the airport, opening when flights arrive (Oct-March only). The Tierra del Fuego National Park also has an office in town, at San MartAn 1395 (Mon-Fri 8am-1pm), but it's unhelpful and offers little you can't get at the tourist office, with the exception of park fishing licences . Licences are also available from the Club de Caza y Pesca, at MaipA? and 9 de Julio. For information on trekking and climbing, contact the Club Andino Ushuaia , Fadul 50 (3-10pm; tel & fax 02901/422335), who will also put you in touch with qualified guides, such as Luis Turi (tel 02901/432642). Register here before embarking on any trek or climb, giving details of your planned route and the date of your return, and do not forget to inform the office that you have arrived back safely when you return.
