To ski at the end of the world, you'll need to visit between late May and early September (June to August are the most reliable months). Ski equipment rental costs from $15 to $40 a day. The closest ski runs to town are the small Club Andino, 3km from town, and the more impressive one by the Glaciar Martial, 7km behind town. Otherwise, you have some excellent cross-country skiing ( esqui de fondo or esqui nA?rdico ) and several small downhill ( esqui alpino ) options in the Sierra Alvear, all of which are accessed from RN3. These include the modern Cerro Castor centre on the Cerro Krund mountain, 26km from town, with 15km of piste in runs up to 2km long. Most options are for beginners and intermediates, but a few black runs can be found. In addition, there are several winter-sports centres ( centros invernales ) where you can try out snowmobiles, snowshoes ($6 per hr), ice-skating and trips on dogsleds ( trineos de perros ).
