The centre occupies a compact area between the Stuart Highway and Leichhardt Terrace, along the dry Todd River, bordered to the north and south by Wills Terrace and Stott Terrace respectively. Bisecting this rectangle is Todd Mall , once the main street, now a relaxing pedestrian thoroughfare lined with alfresco cafes, galleries and souvenir outlets.

The town's sights are scattered, but you can still get around them all in a couple of days on foot. An alternative is to use the green and yellow Alice Wanderer (tel 08/8952 2111; day-ticket $22), a "hop on, hop off" bus service with commentary, visiting most of the places of interest every seventy minutes. The Yeperenye Shopping Centre, around the corner from the tourist office, on Hartley Street, is the terminus for the suburban bus network. This is tailored for shoppers and schoolchildren, which means you'll have to plan your ride around a timetable (available from the tourist office or the Council Offices on Gregory Terrace) rather than just turning up at a bus stop and waiting; of the four main routes, #1 West and #4 South are the most useful. Otherwise your best bet is to rent a car , or a bicycle from any of the hostels, for around $12 a day. There's an enjoyable seventeen-kilometre paved cycle track through the bush to Simpson's Gap, starting at Flynn's Grave, 7km along Larapinta Drive, west of the town centre.
