Like the surrounding desert, night-time Alice initially appears lifeless. However, something can be found going on somewhere most nights, particularly in the latter half of the week. The fortnightly freebie, Pulse , or Alice's daily Centralian Advocate , carry details of what's going on.

The Todd Tavern , at the top of Todd Mall, is the town's landmark drinking spot, complete with "unofficial" segregated bars. Thursday night at Bojangles on Todd Street is all action and The Stuart Arms , right by the "Sails", also features live bands most nights. The latter pub also houses Legends , the town's most popular nightclub ; if you want to get past the bouncers, then collars and covered shoes are "the go". There's jazz and blues at Scotty's and at The Winery on Sunday afternoon from 1pm. Sean's Irish Sibin at Malathi's Restaurant is a quieter option, while homesick Brits can head for the Firkin and Hound , on Hartley Street, a British theme pub that shows just what can be done with a multilevel car park and a little imagination. If nothing else tempts you, there's always the cinema at the top of Todd Mall, with cheap nights on Tuesday. Check the programme at the Araluen Arts Centre (tel 08/8952 5022) on Larapinta Drive: you'll usually find a worthwhile play, film or concert. And if you're feeling lucky, Lasseters Hotel Casino on Barrett Drive can accommodate you - but again, not in thongs and a tatty singlet.
