fiogf49gjkf0d Canberra's
airport
, about 7km east of the city, handles domestic flights only. Despite recent efforts to welcome the backpacker market, the city has ceased its bus service between the airport and the city centre, leaving air passengers no choice but to catch a taxi (roughly $12-14). The main
train station
is located southeast of the centre, on Wentworth Avenue in Kingston, and from here taxis are again the easiest way to get where you're going; trains also stop at the suburb of Queanbeyan, in NSW, where there's some cheap accommodation. Most interstate
buses
drop and pick up at the handy
Jolimont Centre
, downtown at 67 Northbourne Ave; the modern centre has showers, lockers (free if you can find one that works), a TV room, snack bar, post office, internet kiosk and a travel bookshop, which also offers everything from Australia-wide tours to Canberra city bus tickets, as well as some tourist information and maps. Additionally, the centre has ticket offices for the train, airline and bus companies. There is a free direct telephone line to the tourist office, to taxi companies and to accommodation.
The
Canberra Visitor Information Centre
, the main tourist office, is inconveniently located about 2km north of the centre, on Northbourne Avenue in Dickson (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat & Sun 9am-4pm; tel 02/6205 0044 or free call 1800 026 166,
www.canberratourism.com.au
), reached by bus #380; it books tours, transport and accommodation. More central is the
tourist information booth
on the ground floor of the Canberra Centre, a shopping mall on Bunda Street (Mon-Thurs & Sat 9am-5.30pm, Fri 9am-7.30pm, Sun 10am-4pm); it provides maps and information but doesn't make bookings.
