If you're doing your own cooking, there's a 24-hour convenience store inside the Beach House complex beside the Coolangatta Hotel , and bigger supermarkets across the border at the main shopping centre on Wharf Street, in Tweed Heads. There are plenty of snack bars along Griffith Street; check out Orbansen's Milk Bar , at no. 23, for its genuine 1950s decor, which includes a jukebox selector at each table. As for restaurants , Little Malaya Restaurant , right at the northern end of Marine Parade near the Coolangatta Sands Hotel , does an unforgettable crispy-fried whole fish in sour chilli sauce for $23 (enough for two), while the Surf Lifesaving Club down near the border at Greenmount Beach has good-value burgers, salads, sandwiches and cold drinks.

Coolangatta's nightlife centres around the pubs - you'll have to rely on posters to find out what's on. Best are sessions at the Coolangatta Sands Hotel 's fairly relaxed bar (corner of Griffith and McLean streets) and the Coolangatta Hotel 's nightclub (corner of Griffith and Warner streets), which has live music and pool competitions.
