Mindil Beach Markets
attracts thousands of locals who park, unpack their eskies and garden furniture, and settle in for the sunset. A mouthwatering array of sizzling food stalls from all corners of the earth (but mostly Asia) torments your nostrils, and New Age remedies, handicrafts and teeming humanity round off Darwin's one unmissable event. It's a three-kilometre walk from town through the Botanic Gardens, or a short ride on a #4 or #6 bus from the city centre. Alternatively, call Tour Tub (tel 08/8981 5233) or Galaxy Tours (tel 08/8932 6222) for a pick-up.
Parap
's Saturday morning market, on Parap Road (bus #6), or
Rapid Creek market
, off Trower Road on Sunday (bus #6 or #10), are good year-round substitutes, with a smaller food selection, old books and knick-knacks. There is also the recently developed
Night Markets
which have spiced up Mitchell Street.
