If you want to stay, there's a wide variety of accommodation . Budget travellers can stay at the pleasantly-sited Lake Hamilton Caravan Park (tel 03/5572 3855; cabins $35-50) or the Peppercorn Lodge (tel 03/5571 9046; rooms $20-35, dorms under $20, BYO linen), which has backpackers' accommodation and comfortable, heated rooms; the properties are adjacent to each other on Ballarat Road. On the same road at no. 142 is the luxurious Grange Burn Motor Inn (tel 03/5572 5755; $115-150). The relaxed Grand Central Hotel , at 141 Gray St (tel 03/5572 2899; $35-70), is a good place both to eat and sleep: breakfast is included in the price of the motel-style rooms, there's an unpretentious bistro, and bands play here at weekends. The top eating spot however is The Hamilton Strand at 56 Thompson St (Mon-Sat 11am until late; BYO; tel 03/5571 9111), which serves coffee, cakes and light snacks out the front, and more substantial meals in the rooms behind. The menu features dishes like carpaccio of salmon, seared kangaroo or wildberry torte, and the wine list has lots of wines from the Pyrenees region in Victoria. Alternatively, the pleasant Gilly's Coffee Shop & Grill , 106 Gray St, is open from early morning until evening, while The George Hotel , at 213 Gray St, serves up lovely pub food and drink in a great atmosphere.
