There are a big range of tours on offer, from scenic flights to 4WD tours, all of which can be booked from the tourist information centre. Most include a pick-up and return service to and from your accommodation.

Air charters and scenic flights

If you have a bit of cash to spare, small aircraft are an excellent way of getting around, covering the enormous distances quickly and in relative comfort.

Crittenden Air , Airport Terminal (tel 08/8088 5702 or 8087 2930). Tour flights to Tibooburra ($360), White Cliffs ($250), over Lake Eyre and South Australia's Flinders Ranges ($550) as well as several more localscenic tours. Minimum of 4 people or equivalent per person price.

Bus tours

These tend to be overpriced, given that many tours merely provide transport to places that could be more enjoyably visited with a rental car or bike, or even by taxi. Tours are more frequent between early April and the end of November, and have reduced schedules during the hot summer months.

Broken Hill Outback Information and Safari Tours (tel 08/8087 8574, www.bhoutbacktours.com.au ). Half-day tours ($40) to Silverton, the Daydream Mine, Delprats Mine, or city art galleries plus the Sculpture Symposium; a day-tour is also offered to Menindee Lakes and Kinchega National Park ($94).

Silver City Tours (tel 08/8087 3144, www.ruralnet.net.au~wincen/ ). Excursions include Royal Flying Doctor Service ($17), School of the Air ($17), White's Mineral Art Gallery and Mining Museum ($17); half-day tours of city sights ($35), art galleries ($21), sunset Sculpture Symposium ($30), Silverton ($37); day-tours, including lunch, to White Cliffs ($119), Menindee Lakes, Kinchega National Park and Tandou Irrigation Farm ($95), and Mutawintji National Park ($106).

Four-wheel-drive tours

Broken Hill's Outback Tours (tel 08/8087 7800 or free call 1800 670 120, www.outbacktours.net ). Amongst these long-haul fully-inclusive tours are a four-day/three-night trip to all three national parks detailed in this section of the website ($980), and a six-day excursion to Flinders Ranges. They will happily provide customized tours too.

Corner Country Adventure Tours (tel 08/8087 5142, www.cornercountryadventure.com.au ). Longer 4WD trips, including a four-day/three-night trip to all three national parks detailed in this section of the website ($710), or tailor-made excursions as far afield as the Birdsville Track.

Goanna Safari (tel 08/8087 6057, www.goanna-safari.com.au ). Heartily recommended tours with a well-informed, uniquely qualified and interesting guide who is never in too much of a rush; maximum four people in the group. One-day tours ($95); to Poolamacca Station, a sheep station 60km north of Broken Hill; Menindee lakes and Kinchega National Park; Mutawintji National Park including the Aboriginal art sites; the Dingo Fence; or closer to home a round-up of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Silverton, and the Sculpture Symposium. Two-day safari to White Cliffs, staying in a dug-out motel ($340), or extending to three days and including Mutawintji ($510). Tibooburra and Camerons Corner are taken in on another two-day trip (also $340). Short trips out to The Living Desert sculpture site (minimum $10, cheaper depending on numbers) are also available.

Tri-State Safari (tel 08/8088 2389, www.tristate.com.au ). Tours ranging from sunset sculptures and wine ($32), to one-day trips to Muntawinji ($119) and Kinchega ($132) and mammoth Burke and Wills or desert tours, between four and ten days in length.
