Bike rental Many hostels have either free or rentable bikes for guests; otherwise try Let's Go Bikes, 93 Jonson St, opposite Woolworths (tel 02/6685 6067; also rollerblades), which charges around $20 a day for a mountain bike. A cycling track runs from Byron to Suffolk Park via Broken Head nature reserve (8km one-way). Hinterland tours are organized by Backcountry Cycling.

Books Persephone's Window, cnr Byron and Fletcher streets, has a small but well-chosen selection of quality literature and serves excellent coffee. They will give readers a discount on production of a Rough Guide . Second Reading Books on Byron St are good for secondhand bargains.

Kirklands goes daily to Brisbane, and to Ballina (with stops at Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads), also daily to Lismore and Casino; bookings through Cape Byron Travel, 6 Lawson St (tel 02/6685 6262). Blanch's Coaches (tel 02/6686 2144) runs south to Ballina via Suffolk Park, Bangalow and Lennox Head, and north to Mullimbimby - buy your ticket on the bus.

Diving Most dive schools offer complete scuba-diving courses, together with more affordable one-day courses and daily snorkelling trips (around $30). Byron Bay Dive Centre & Bayside Scuba, cnr Lawson and Fletcher streets (tel 02/6685 8333 or free call 1800 243 483), also does a good-value, one-day course for $115 including all equipment; Sundive, Middleton St (tel 02/6685 7755), is a small, friendly outfit. If you're already trained, one dive at Julian Rocks, with gear, costs from $75, two dives $105.

Gay and lesbian information Tropical Fruits is a social group for gays and lesbians, holding dance parties every few weeks in halls around the area; the Fruitline (tel 02/6622 4353) gives recorded information on upcoming events.

Hang-gliding Tandem take-offs (30min $130) and microlights (15min $70; 30min $135) from Byron's lighthouse point. Call Skylimit (tel 02/6684 3711) for aeronautical info.

Horse riding Pegasus (tel 02/6687 1446) charge $35 for one hour and $55 for two hours. Combined riding and canoeing trips cost $45 per hour. Seahorses Riding Centre, 9 Boarder St (tel 02/6680 8155), offers lessons for $60 per half-day. Rides include beach, rainforest, sunrise and sunset tours ($45).

Internet access Facilities are available all over town, but Global Gossip , by the Information centre on Lawson Street (daily 8am-midnight), has the most reliable connection and the best rates.

Laundries You can use the laundry at most accommodation; otherwise try Byron Dry Cleaners and Laundrette, 42 Jonson St (daily 7am-7pm), with both self-service and service washes available, or the unattended self-service laundry on Marvell St (daily 7am-7pm).

Left luggage Byron Bus & Backpacker Centre, next to the tourist information centre, will mind bags for 24 hours for $3 (daily 7am-6.30pm).

Surfing Many hostels provide free boards. For surf lessons the best outfits are the professional East Coast Surf School (tel 02/6685 5989 or 015/257 243; $290 for a weekend surf camp), with safety-conscious sports science graduates teaching not just technique but how to read the surf; Byron Bay Surf School, at 84 Jonson St (tel 02/6685 7536 or free call 1800 707 274, www.byron-bay.com/surf-school ), rents out surf gear and also offers 3hr lessons from $33 with free pick-ups daily for classes at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
