Eating and nightlife

Cairns has no shortage of places to eat . Least expensive are the takeaways between the Esplanade's hostels serving Chinese food, falafel, kebabs and pasta. Some open early while others, such as La Pizza on the corner of Aplin Street, never close, switching from fast food during the day and evening to coffee and croissants at dawn. The night market also houses a fast-food plaza, with a choice ranging from fish and chips to pizza or sushi. If you want to eat in, any of the restaurants listed here offer good value; alternatively, you can stock up at the supermarkets on Abbott Street or in Cairns Central.

Openly drinking on the streets is illegal in Cairns, but the pub and club culture thrives undaunted. Clubs open around 6pm, most charging $5 entry for bar and disco entertainment, or more if there's a band playing; some will collect you from your hostel and throw in a free or discounted meal. Many pubs also feature live music once a week, and some home-grown talent such as Women in Docs have recently made the national music scene - reviews and details are in Cairns' free weekly listings magazine , Barfly . Try not to make yourself an obvious target for pickpockets and bag-snatchers who work the nightclubs, though the steady reports of rapes and muggings are more worrying - take advantage of the Home and Dry Bus which leaves from outside PJ O'Briens on Shields Street on the hour between 11pm and 4am, and delivers to all the city's backpackers for just $1.
