Mackay has plenty of good, cheap places to eat . There are snack bars all around the centre, or try one of the places below for a restaurant meal. Several downtown pubs all offer lunch specials - around $3 for a full meal - as do a couple of the restaurants.

Angelo's , 27 Sydney St. Mediterranean cooking and genuine wood-fired pizzas.

Coco's Bar & Grill (at the Austral Hotel ), Victoria St (bus station end). A carnivore's dream, with marinated grilled steaks in 600g, 800g and 1kg servings for $15-20.

Meeting House , 53 Sydney St (tel 07/4953 5835). Singaporean-Chinese cooking in all its splendour: fixed-price lunches for $6.60 (try the laksa - a colossal bowl of noodles, seafood and spicy coconut soup); and A  la carte dinners - around $15 - featuring unforgettable five-spice squid and whole fried fish. Very popular, so book or get in early; closed Mon evenings.

Sorbello's , 168 Victoria St. Good choice for pastas and typical Italian dishes for around $20 per person. Lunch specials Mon-Fri; open for dinner daily.

Toong Tong Thai , 10 Sydney St. Long-established Thai restaurant and takeaway with impeccable food, authentically hot and spicy if requested. Around $20 a head for a full meal.

Woody Pear , 7 Wood St (tel 07/4957 4942). Modern/Mediterranean, with an ex-London chef and fantastic seafood dishes. Lunchtime specials menu, otherwise mains are $18 and up.
