Practicalities

Rockhampton is divided by the Fitzroy River, with all services clustered directly south of the Fitzroy Bridge along Quay Street and East Street Mall; the Bruce Highway runs right through town past two pairs of fibreglass bulls (repeatedly "de-balled" by pranksters). Buses stop just north of the bridge on the highway; the train station is 1km south of the centre on Murray Street; and the airport is 4km to the west at the end of Hunter Street. Tourist information is available from the booth on the highway at the Tropic Marker, or at the more central information centre in the old customs house on Quay Street (Mon-Fri 8.30am-4.30pm, Sat-Sun 9am-4pm; tel 07/4922 5339). Recent reports of nasty incidents involving gangs of Aboriginal teenagers are unfortunately too numerous to ignore; there's no need for paranoia, but do follow local advice and don't walk alone at night.
