fiogf49gjkf0d Townsville's roughly triangular city centre is hemmed in by Cleveland Bay on the north, Ross Creek to the south and Castle Hill to the west. Oriented northeast and parallel with Ross Creek,
     Flinders Street
is the main drag, sectioned into a downtown pedestrian
    mall
before running its last five hundred metres as
    Flinders Street East
    . The
    airport
     is 5km northwest; a
    shuttle bus
($6) meets most flights, stopping at points around town - phone in advance on 07/4775 5544. Long-distance buses stop at the
    Transit Centre
on the south side of Ross Creek on Palmer Street, while the
    train station
is on the north side of the creek on Flinders Street.

    Public
    transport
serves the suburbs rather than the sights, though much of what there is to see is central; some hostels have bikes available. A very helpful
    information
booth, with a separate counter handling (and booking) diving, cruises and tours, is located in Flinders Street Mall (daily 9am-5pm).
