Banks and foreign exchange All the major banks are located on King William St. Exchange services are available at the international airport, at American Express and at Thomas Cook, 45 Grenfell St (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 08/8212 3354), 4 Rundle Mall (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 10am-2pm; tel 08/8231 6977). If you're desperate beyond these hours, the casino or international hotels on North Terrace can help, but obviously the exchange rates will be poor. Bikes and bike rental Flinders Camping, 187 Rundle St (tel 08/8359 3344), rents bikes for $15 per day and offers weekly rates; Linear Park Mountain Bike Hire at Elder Park (tel 08/8223 6271), situated near a section of the River Torrens Linear Park bike track, hires bikes by the hour or day at competitive prices; Bicycle SA, 1 Sturt St (tel 08/8410 1406), is a nonprofit cycling organi zation providing information and cycling maps and organizing regular touring trips. Buses A The State Guide , available from South Australian Travel Centre has route maps and timetables of all South Australia's bus routes. Most long-distance buses leave from the Central Bus Station, Franklin St. Greyhound Pioneer (tel 13 2030) has a nationwide service that includes Alice Springs and Broken Hill in its destinations, while Firefly Express (tel 08/8231 1488) and McCafferty's (tel 08/8212 5066, reservations tel 13 1499), run to Melbourne and Sydney. V-Line (tel 08/8231 7620 or 13 6196, www.vline.vic.gov.au ) also run to Melbourne from Adelaide and Mount Gambier. State services are dominated by Premier Stateliner Coach Service (tel 08/8415 5555, www.premierstateliner.com.au ), which goes to the Riverland, Whyalla, Port Lincoln, Ceduna, Woomera, Roxby Downs and Olympic Dam, Wilpena Pound via Port Augusta, the Yorke and Fleurieu peninsulas and to Mount Gambier either inland (via Keith, Bordertown, Naracoorte, Coonawarra and Penola) or along the coast (via Meningie, Kingston, Robe and Millicent). Other local operators include the Barossa-Adelaide Passenger Service (tel 08/8564 3022), which stops at the main towns in the Barossa Valley en route to Angaston; the Yorke Peninsula Passenger Service (free call at 1800 625 099), which runs from Adelaide to Yorketown, down the east coast via Ardrossan, Port Vincent and Edithburgh, and down the centre via Maitland and Minlaton; the Mid North Passenger Service (tel 08/8826 2346) via the Clare Valley and/or Burra to Peterborough; and the Murray Bridge Passenger Service (tel 08/8532 2633) to Pinnaroo via Murray Bridge and to Murray Bridge via Mannum and Meningie. Tickets can be purchased at the Central Bus Station; the Bus Booking Centre at Station Arcade, 52 Hindley St (tel 08/8212 5200), can arrange travel on any bus service. Camping equipment and rental Rundle St is the place: for rental, try Flinders Camping at no. 187 (tel 08/8223 1913), who can kit you out for the Flinders Ranges given 24hr notice - they are also the only place in town that repairs backpacks; Paddy Pallin at no. 228 sells a range of high quality gear, plus maps; or there's Scout Outdoor Centre at no. 192. Canoe rental and tours Try Canoe & Kayak Hire, 29 Angus St, Goodwood (tel 08/8271 6354), which also offers canoe trips to the Torrens Island mangroves, an area frequented by dolphins. Car rental Avis (tel 1300/367 227), Hertz (tel 13 3039) and Thrifty (tel 08/8211 8788) have desks at the airport. Otherwise, try the recommended small and friendly Access, 121 Currie St (tel 08/8212 5900 or free call 1800 812 580, access@tne.net.au ), who do free airport deliveries and are one of the few companies which allow you to take their cars to Kangaroo Island; they also hire out sports cars. Older, cheaper cars can be obtained from Cut Price Car Rentals (tel 08/8443 7788, www.cutprice.com.au ), who also do one-way rentals and buy backs, or Rent-a-Bug (tel 08/8234 0911). Environment and conservation The Conservation Council of South Australia, 120 Wakefield St (tel 08/8223 5155), is a good place to find out what's going on; there's a notice board and reference library. The Environment Shop, 77 Grenfell St (tel 08/8204 1910, www.parks.sa.gov.au ) has good free maps of the national parks and other useful brochures. The Wilderness Society has its campaign office at 116 Grote St (tel 08/8231 6586) and a shop in Victoria Square Arcade, Victoria Square (tel 08/8231 0625). Hospital Royal Adelaide Hospital, North Terrace (tel 08/8222 4000). Dental Hospital, North Terrace (tel 08/8222 8222). Internet access Ngapartji, 211 Rundle St (Mon-Thurs 8.30am-7pm, Fri 8.30am-10.30pm, Sat 10am-10pm, Sun noon-7pm; tel 08/8235 4001) is a snazzy multimedia centre whose Aboriginal name means "community skills brought together". A couple of computer terminals out front can be used for free; the cybercafA© inside charges $8 per hour ($4 per 30min, $2 per 15min). There's limited-time free access at the State Library (book in advance) and at the Women's Information Service (women only), and cheap access at Talking Cents, 53 Hindley St ($2 per 30min). Many of the backpackers now have internet access for guests, including Adelaide YHA, Canon St Lodge, Backpack Australia, Sunny's and Glenelg Beach Resort . Laundries Adelaide Launderette, 152 Sturt St (daily 7am-8pm; service washes 8am-5pm); Gilles St Laundromat, 316 Gilles St (daily 7am-8pm; unattended), is handy for hostels. Maps The Map Shop, 16A Peel St, between Hindley and Currie streets, has the largest range of local and state maps; if you're a member of an affiliated automobile association overseas, you can get free regional maps and advice on road conditions from the Royal Automobile Association, 41 Hindmarsh Square (tel 08/8202 4540, www.raa.net ). Newspapers Adelaide's The Advertiser is very provincial and doesn't have good coverage of national and international news, but is useful on Thursday for entertainment listings, and Wednesday and Saturday for classifieds; Melbourne's The Age is freely available as an alternative. The best place to buy foreign and interstate newspapers is Rundle Arcade Newsagency, off Gawler Place. Pharmacy Midnight Pharmacy, 13 West Terrace (Mon-Sat 7am-midnight, Sun & public holidays 9am-midnight). In Glenelg try Walker & Stevens Chemmart, cnr Jetty Rd and Gordon St (daily 8.30am-10pm). Swimming pool Adelaide City Swim, 235 Flinders St (Mon 5.30am-8pm, Sat 6am-5pm, Sun 9am-1pm; $6 per hour). Adelaide Aquatic Centre, cnr Jeffcott Rd and Fitzroy Terrace, North Adelaide (daily 5am-10pm; swim $4.95), is an indoor centre with pool, gym, sauna and spa; take bus #231 from North Terrace. Taxis Adelaide Independent (tel 13 2211); Suburban Taxi Service (tel 13 1008); Yellow Cabs (tel 13 2227). There's a taxi rank on the corner of Pulteney and Rundle streets. Telephones Rundle Mall has lots of phones, including ones that take credit cards. For peace and quiet, try the Phone Room in the GPO. Tours The hop-on hop-off Adelaide Explorer City Sights Tour, in a bus dolled up as a tram (tel 08/8364 1933; $35; 3hr; departing the Travel Centre, 14 King William St, daily 9am, 10.30am, noon, 1.30pm & 3pm), takes in the city, Glenelg and West Beach. Further afield, the majority of tours from Adelaide head for the Barossa Valley, Kangaroo Island and the Fleurieu Peninsula. General operators include Gray Line (tel 1300/858 687, www.grayline.com ), for upmarket tours to Cleland Wildlife Park, Adelaide Hills and Hahndorf, the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Kangaroo Island; Premier Day Tours (tel 08/8415 5566, www.premierstateliner.com.au ), and Adelaide Sightseeing (tel 08/8231 4144, www.adelaidesightseeing.com.au ), which both also range further afield to Murray River, the Coorong and Flinders Ranges. Adelaide is also the home base for the excellent Wayward Bus, 115 Waymouth St (tel 08/8410 8833 or free call 1800 882 823, fax 8410 8844, www.waywardbus.com.au ), which does a good one-way, small-group tour from Adelaide to Melbourne (or vice versa) via the scenic coastal route (three and a half days; $290 includes breakfast, lunch and hostel accommodation). Wayward also runs one-way tours to Alice Springs taking in the Clare Valley, Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Coober Pedy, Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon (eight days; $770 all-inclusive); plus a five-day option taking in Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta Track, Lake Eyre, Maree, Wilpena Pound and Flinders Ranges ($460). Heading Bush 4WD Adventures (tel 08/8648 6655, www.headbush.mtx.net ) does ten-seater camping tours to the Flinders Ranges (three days; $299); while Camp Wild (tel 08/8332 6601 or free call 1800 444 321, www.campwild.com.au ) offers an adventurous 4WD camping tour to Kangaroo Island (two and a half days; $260 all inclusive), and another tour all the way to Alice Springs taking in the Flinders Ranges, Simpson Desert, Uluru, Kings Canyon, Devils Marbles and Kakadu (ten days; $985 all inclusive). The Pregnancy Advisory Centre, 21 Bellmore Terrace in Woodville Park (tel 08/8347 4955) offer pregnancy testing, abortion and counselling. The Women's Information Service, Station Arcade, Adelaide Railway Station, 136 North Terrace (Mon-Fri 8am-6pm, Sat 9am-5pm; tel 08/8303 0590), has loads of practical information and very handy free internet access which does not have to be prebooked (women only; max 30min per person).
