For further information, head for the volunteer-run Victor Harbor Tourist Information Centre next to the causeway (daily 9am-5pm; tel 08/8552 5738, www.tourismvictorharbor.com.au ); in the same building, the Fleurieu & KI Booking Centre (free call 1800 088 552, genesis@granite.net.au ) can book accommodation and tours. The best place to stay is the Anchorage , 21 Flinders Parade (tel 08/8552 5970, fax 8552 1970, www.anchorage.mtx.net ; $50-150), a lovingly restored beachfront guesthouse with en-suite and spa facilities, a good restaurant attached and an adjoining backpackers hostel (dorms under $20). Alternatives include the Villa Victor Bed and Breakfast , 59 Victoria St (tel 08/8552 4258; $70-115); and the Family Inn Motel , 300 Port Elliot Rd (tel 08/8552 1941, fax 8552 8645; $50-70)

Good places to eat abound. The super Cafe Bavaria at 11 Albert Place is a gleaming venue with delicious fresh-baked German cakes and savouries at reasonable prices (closed Mon). The Blackfriars Bookshop and Coffee Bar , 157 Hindmarsh Rd, also has good cakes, coffee and internet access ($4 per 30min) If you're after Italian food, head for Nino Solari's Pizzeria , nearby at no. 16 (closed Mon), where you can plough into some generous portions of pasta and home-made gelati ; for seafood, try the Anchorage CafA© on beachfront Flinders Parade, a lively city-style cafA© with an eclectic menu that's good for vegetarians. The best place to drink is on the Esplanade at the Hotel Crown which serves cheap bar meals, has streetside tables and big-name bands on Thursday and Friday and DJs on Saturday.
