Ask at the tourist offices for Sydney: The Official Guide , a free booklet with excellent maps of Sydney and the surrounding areas, plus a CityRail and ferry plan. The Hip Guide to Sydney is also handy. Several free monthly listings magazines are worth picking up at tourist offices: the weekly Where Magazine is probably the best for general information, while This Month in Sydney is also worth consulting. Sydney Council distributes a basic photocopied guide, City Life , every Wednesday to all visitor centres and infomation booths, and also publishes the bi-monthly Official Sydney Events Guide (free from the Town Hall, $3.25 from newsagents). To get under the skin of Sydney, read Friday's Sydney Morning Herald for its "Metro" listings supplement. TNT Magazine is the best of an array of publications aimed at backpackers , while hostel notice boards themselves act as an informal network, advertising everything from cars to camping gear. The NPWS produce a very handy detailed free fold-out map, Sydney Harbour National Park, which provides excellent detail of the harbour, showing all the main sites, ferry routes and bushwalks; pick it up from Cadman's Cottage .
