Alexander Hotel , 78 Formby Rd (tel 03/6424 2252). Refurbished riverfront pub, popular with the young crowd. A good jukebox in the lounge bar, from where you can gaze out at the ships; excellent bistro menu.

Banjo's , Rooke Street Mall. One of a Tasmanian chain of eat-in bakeries. The best budget choice, offering inexpensive fresh-baked goods and unlimited cups of tea and coffee. Great place for an early breakfast. Daily 6am-6pm.

Chinese Garden , 33 King St (tel 03/6424 4148). A popular Cantonese restaurant serving lunch and dinner daily. Licensed.

The Old Rectory , 71 Wright St, East Devonport (tel 03/6427 8037). Located in a heritage church building with an old English garden. There's a daytime alfresco menu, while evening menus specialize in game and local seafood. Licensed. Lunch Thurs-Sun, dinner Wed-Sun.

Spurs Canteena , 18 King St. A bar with Wild West decor and atmosphere; also a bistro and attached nightclub. Wed-Sun 4pm-late.

Taco Villa , Kempling St (tel 03/6424 6762). Good Mexican food. BYO. Tues-Sun dinner only.
