Cruise Company , Brooke Street Pier (tel 03/6234 9294). Fast catamaran cruises. The best trip on the Derwent is their "Iron Pot Cruise" to the river mouth and across to the top of Bruny Island (summer only Sat 2pm; 2hr; $22). The Cadbury's Cruise heads upriver to the chocolate factory at Claremont; it's essential to book in advance as chocaholics treat this as a pilgrimage (Mon-Fri 10am; 4hr; $36.50).

Fell's Historic Ferries , Franklin Wharf Pier (tel 03/6223 5893). A range of particularly good-value harbour cruises on the MV Emmalisa , all of which include meals of some kind ($11-35).

Lady Nelson , Elizabeth Street Pier (tel 03/6234 3348). This replica of the brig in which Matthew Flinders made his exploratory journeys is a sail-training vessel, but also offers bargain summer-only weekend pleasure trips (Sat & Sun 11am, 1pm & 3pm; 1hr 30min; $5). When the ship leaves Hobart at the end of summer for longer journeys on the eastern seaboard, you can join as a paying passenger (about $125 per day).
