For information , your first stop should be the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre , on the corner of St John and Paterson streets (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-3pm, Sun 9am-noon; tel 03/6336 3133, www.gatewaytas.com.au ), which can arrange car hire and book accommodation and travel tickets. As well as picking up street and regional maps here, grab a copy of the free weekly newspaper, Launceston Week , which has some listings. The Wilderness Society Shop, at 174 Charles St, opposite Princes Square (Mon-Fri 9.30am-5.30pm, Sat 10am-1pm; tel 03/6334 2499), is a good source of information about wilderness issues and the environment. You can sign up here for the summer walks programme - weekends and day-walks - that takes you into areas under threat by logging.
