Hobart Coaches runs three bus services a day from Hobart (Mon-Fri only) and Tassie Link also drop off on their Hobart to Swansea service (2 daily Mon-Fri only). One of the nicest places to stay is Prospect House (tel 03/6260 2207, fax 6260 2551, www.Prospect-House.com.au ; $115-150), a Georgian country mansion set in extensive landscaped grounds, with its own licensed restaurant; it's on your left as you come into town on Cambridge Road. Further out, 6km from Richmond along Prossers Road, is Richmond Country Bed and Breakfast (tel 03/6260 4238, fax 6260 4423; $70-90), a comfortable, reasonably priced, non-smoking homestead in a quiet rural setting. The cheapest place to stay is the Richmond Cabin and Tourist Park , on Middle Tea Tree Road on the outskirts of town (tel 03/6260 2192; cabins $50-70, on-site vans $35-50), which provides shady grounds for camping and has an indoor heated pool.

For food , walk along Bridge Street, where you'll find the pretty Richmond Arms Hotel , which serves upmarket pub meals; the Richmond Bakery on Edward Street, just off Bridge Street, has a Swiss baker who makes delicious pastries; and there's an upmarket brasserie in the Richmond Food & Wine Centre , 27 Bridge St (daily 10am-6pm, Fri & Sat until 8pm), where the emphasis is on quality Tasmanian produce.
