You won't starve in Ballarat, nor die for want of a drink, as the city has over fifty pubs. Fast food can be had at McDonald's on Bakery Hill and Pizza Hut opposite.

The Ansonia , 32 Lydiard St (tel 03/5332 4678). Restaurant in refurbished building that also houses a swish boutique hotel. The eclectic cuisine betrays influences from the Mediterranean to Southeast Asia. Licensed; open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner (book for dinner).

Cafe Pazani , 102 Sturt St. Slick Italian cafAŠ serving expensive food and excellent coffee. Licensed. Tues-Sat 9am-1am, Sun & Mon 9am-5.30pm.

Da Vincis , 29 Sturt St. The best place for pasta in town: a lively atmosphere and generous, good-value servings, plus vegetarian options. Licensed. Open daily.

Europa CafAŠ , 411 Sturt St. A pleasant cafAŠ serving good coffee, cakes and breads, and light meals. Sun-Wed 9am-6pm, Thurs-Sat 9am until late.

Game Keeper's Secret , Humffrey and Mair streets (tel 03/5332 6000). African-themed restaurant run by South Africans. The place for fun-loving thirty-somethings in search of good, interesting cuisine. Open daily for lunch and dinner.

Golden City Hotel , 427 Sturt St. This historic 1896 hotel packs them in with an all-you-can-eat lunch, and a varied dinner menu. Relaxed bar with espresso machine, pool tables, music videos and locally brewed Ballarat Bitter.

Irish Murphys , 36 Sturt St. Big food at small prices, decent beer and frequent live music with minimal Irish kitsch combine to make this bar one of the most popular in town.

L'Espresso , 417 Sturt St. European-style and understandably hip place for coffee and eclectic breakfasts; "proper" food is good, too, and very moderately priced. Bring a book, a friend, or just eavesdrop. Daily 7.30am-6pm, also Thurs-Sun 6.30pm until late.

Masons at the Gallery , 40 Lydiard St North. A pleasant little cafAŠ at the Fine Art Gallery, with lots of flowers and imaginative food. Daily 10.30am-4.30pm.

The Pancake Kitchen , 2 Grenville St South. Pancakes on order all day and night in a cosy goldrush building.

Porter's Restaurant , cnr Mair and Peel streets. An old pub transformed into a stylish bar and restaurant. Lunch Tues-Fri, dinner Mon-Sat.

Rendezvous Cafe , 54 Lydiard St. Coffee and light meals served in a renovated cafAŠ across from the Regent Multiplex Cinema. Closed Sun.

Tokyo Grill House , 109 Bridge Mall (tel 03/5333 3945). Specializes in teppanyaki cooking, which means it's prepared on hotplates in front of you. Expensive. Open daily for lunch and dinner.
