The well-organized Warrnambool Visitor Information Centre (daily 9am-5pm; tel 03/5564 7837 or free call 1800 637 725) is at 600 Raglan Parade. For backpacker accommodation , the pleasant Stuffed Backpacker, operated by Flaherty's Chocolate Shop, 52 Kepler St (tel & fax 03/5562 2459, www.stuffed.axs.com.au ; dorms under $20, twins $20-35), is just around the corner from the busy end of Liebig Street and offers B&B lodgings in a renovated old building with dorms and twin rooms. The Backpackers Barn at the Victoria Hotel at the corner of Lava and Liebig streets (tel 03/5562 2073, fax 5561 3775; dorms under $20, rooms $20-50) is equally centrally located, has dorms and doubles and a fully equipped kitchen. From the clean and friendly Nomads Warrnambool Beach Backpackers , at 17 Stanley St (tel 03/5562 4874; dorms under $20, rooms $35-50), you're less than ten-minutes' walk away from the beach. The hostel has doubles and comfy dorms with lockers, and you can phone for a pick-up from the bus stop in town. Moving upmarket, the refurbished Hotel Warrnambool , on the corner of Koroit and Kepler streets (tel 03/5562 2377; $35-90), offers good B&B pub accommodation in the town centre, while Pertobe B&B at 10 Banyan St (tel 03/5561 7078; $70-90) is in a convenient location between the town centre and the beach. Just south of the roundabout along Pertobe Road and near the foreshore there are a few more options: Warrnambool Surfside Holiday Park , with self-contained one- to three-bedroom cottages and cabins as well as campsites right on the beach (tel 03/5561 2611; cabins $50-115); and Port Warrnambool Village B&B (tel 03/5562 8063; $115-150), which has brand-new three-bedroom apartments with direct beach access. In whale-watching season, an excellent choice is the charming Whale Bay B&B (tel 03/5562 2204, bodycoat@datafast.net.au ; $90-115), 6km from town at 234 Hopkins Point Rd, just steps away from the beach and whale-watching platform. If none of these places have room, you could try any of the motels that line the Princes Highway at each end of town.

There are plenty of good places to eat on Liebig Street. Freshly cooked fish and chips are served at Seafoods , at no. 126. The Victoria Hotel , on the corner of Liebig and Lava streets, has bar meals and all-you-can-eat pasta, soup and casserole for $9 on Wednesday nights. Beach Babylon at no. 72 serves pizza and pasta, while the Freshwater Cafe at no. 78 is a renowned modern Australian restaurant (Tues-Fri lunch and dinner, Sat & Sun dinner). On the other side of the road, the funky Fishtales Cafe at no. 63 has an open courtyard, good coffee and is open from 7.45am until late; Restaurant Malaysia at no. 69 features inexpensive Southeast Asian cuisine; and Figsellers Cafe at no. 89 is a simple, pleasant joint serving sandwiches, quiches and other snacks from 8.30am. Further up the street there's The Black Olive Bar Restaurant & Cafe in the Hotel Grand at no. 158 and Rios Deli at no. 142 for sandwiches, bagels and cakes. Rogers Bar in the Whalers Inn , on the corner of Liebig and Timor streets, is a slick, modern-looking place where Warrnambool's young and trendy go to drink . It's only rivalled by the basement bar attached to Cafe Regal , itself a cheap but stylish lunch spot near the art gallery on Timor Street.

Internet access is available at the hostels (residents only) and at Hotspot , 200 Timor St.
