Practicalities

The tourist office (daily 9am-5pm; tel 08/9941 1146), on the corner of Robinson and Stuart streets, has information on tours into the surrounding countryside, including Mount Augustus. Buses also arrive here, and the post office is just opposite.

Accommodation in town includes the overpriced Gateway Motel on Robinson Street (tel 08/9941 1532, fax 9941 2606; $90-115), with a pool and restaurant; the Hospitality Inn (tel 08/9941 1600 or 13 1779, fax 9941 2405; $90-115) on West Street; and an excellent B&B called The Outcamp (tel 08/9941 2421, fax 9941 3116; $70-90) at 16 Olivia Terrace, overlooking the Fascine, as the foreshore is known. As for the hostels , the Backpackers Paradise , near the end of Robinson Street (tel 08/9941 2966, fax 9941 3662; under $20), is the best choice, with a huge kitchen, TV room, ping pong and a garden with pool. There are no fewer than seven caravan parks within 5km of town: the Carnarvon Tourist Centre (tel 08/9941 1438; on-site vans $35-50), 500m up Robinson Street from the post office, is the most central.

Snacks and counter lunches can be had at the Port and Carnarvon hotels (trouble-free nights switch between one and the other) or at JR's Lunch Bar , all on Robinson Street. The Harbourview Cafe , near the Small Boat Harbour south of town, has good but pricey seafood. The best bet in town is the Tropicana Restaurant and Cocktail Bar at the Carnarvon Tavern , which has excellent-value buffets from $13, or Tropical Bird Park , 55 Angelo St (book on 08/9941 2471), where there are barbecues on Friday and Saturday nights for $8.
