Outback tracks near Halls Creek

Three long-distance Outback tracks converge near Halls Creek, each giving you a taste of remote Outback dust. The Tanami Track is signposted off the highway, 17km west of town, indicating 1040km to Alice Springs. The WA section can be rough and sandy, but after the NT border it's merely corrugated, and it's half the distance of the sealed road. A turning at Carrunya Station leads to Wolfe Creek Meteorite Crater , the second biggest in the world, but not worth the 137-kilometre detour from the sealed highway unless you're coming from or going to Alice.

The road south of Halls Creek to the Old Town leads on to the Buchanan Highway , an old stock route that joins the Stuart Highway near Dunmarra (NT) - nearly 800km long, it gets even less traffic than the Tanami while lacking some of its flat monotony. Finally, you're unlikely just to drive down the Canning Stock Route to Wiluna on a whim. At 1860km (4WD only) it's the world's longest stock route and the ultimate challenge for well-equipped off-roaders.
