Don't leave Kalbarri without checking out Finlay's Fish BBQ (daily 11.30am-2pm & 5.30-8.30pm; tel 08/9937 1260) on Magee Crescent. With plate-spinning Captain Finlay's fresh fish, salad and damper for $10, and an unusual setting in an old ice works (plus occasional fireside ballads), Finlay's on a balmy night is a treat.

All the other restaurants can seem rather ordinary by comparison. Echoes , above the shopping centre (daily 6.30pm-late), is the town's best, with meals for $15; the Zuytdorp (daily 6-10pm) at the Kalbarri Beach Resort is a close rival, with a $17 smorgasbord. The Lure 'n' Line (daily 10am-8pm), on Grey Street, has views and seafood lunches, and Rivers Cafe (daily 10am-8pm), opposite the wharf, has takeaways and more fresh seafood. Kalbarru Pizza (Tues-Sun 5.30pm-late), behind the Gilgai Tavern on Porter Street, serves average pizzas from $8, and there's a good health-food cafe inside the shopping centre. Black Rock Cafe , on the corner of Woods Street, serves pastries, baguettes and feeble cappuccinos. Of the two pubs , the Kalbarri Hotel on Grey Street is where the locals hang out, while the livelier Gilgai Tavern on Porter Street also serves meals.
