The tourist bureau (daily 8am-5pm; tel 08/9168 1177), on Coolibah Drive, has displays and videos on the area's many attractions, and details of all the tours that can take you there. There is a perennially warm swimming pool ($2) over the road, and the post office is also on Coolibah Drive. Buses arrive outside the Shire offices, passing through daily for Katherine and Darwin (NT) and Broome.

There are two hostels in town. The Desert Inn (tel 08/9168 2702; under $20) on Konkerberry Drive, close to the pub and supermarket, has twins, eight-bed air-conditioned dorms and a shaded pool and terrace. Kununurra Backpackers (tel 08/9168 1711 or free call 1800 641 998; under $20), 111 Nutwood Crescent, has a small pool, TV room and a section accommodating longer-term workers. Of the town's five caravan parks , the Town (tel 08/9168 1763), on Bloodwood Drive, is the most central; the Kona (tel 08/9168 1031) is by Lake Kununurra, west of town; and Hidden Valley (tel 08/9168 1790), a kilometre north of town, has cheap campsites. The Mercure Inn (tel 08/9168 1455 or free call 1800 642 244, fax 9168 2622; $115-150), on the highway, is the town's best motel ; you could try the cheaper Hotel Kununurra (tel 08/9168 1344 or free call 1800 642 244, fax 9168 1946; $90-115) on Messmate Way.

Places to eat include the Kimberley Craft Cafe on Banksia Street, Valentino's (daily 5-10pm) on Papuana Street for pizzas, or Chopsticks Restaurant (daily 6-9.30pm) at the Country Club , next to the Hotel Kununurra . Gulliver's Tavern , opposite the Desert Inn , gets the occasional band in the picking season, when the town gets fairly lively.
