Perth has a robust, self-sufficient and extremely friendly gay and lesbian scene. The heart of the action is
Northbridge
, but neighbouring North Perth, Highgate and Mount Lawley all have more than their share of gay residents, while lesbians seem to opt for a relaxed lifestyle down in Fremantle. As usual, the quickest way to plug into the scene is to pick up the community paper: in Perth it's the

October heats up with Perth Pride , celebrated with the usual array of fun and games, including a night march and dance party. Also in October, lesbians march to Reclaim The Night . Every November competitors get set to "go for glory" at the Western Australia Gay Olympics . At other times of year, outdoor organizations such as GAGS and Team Perth can put you in touch with other pink athletes. The main community organizations for gays and lesbians in Perth are the Gay Activities Group Services (GAGS), PO Box 8234, Perth 6000, which is responsible for the Gay Olympics and other sporting events; the Gay Outdoor Group, PO Box 263, Cottesloe, Perth 6011 (tel 08/9270 7181); Team Perth, PO Box 3234, Stirling St, Perth 6849; and Wednesday Women (tel 08/9328 9044), a lesbian social group.
