Salzburg is divided by the River Salzach into the linkes Salzachufer (left bank), on the western side of the river, and the rechtes Salzachufer (right bank), on the east. On the left bank, the Altstadt holds the concentration of historic sights, though most points of arrival are across the river. That said, central Salzburg is reasonably compact, and it's relatively easy to get around on foot.

The Hauptbahnhof is north of the centre on Sudtirolerplatz, a 25-minute walk from the Altstadt (buses #1, #2, #5, #6, #51 and #55 run from the station to either F-Hanusch-Platz or Rudolfskai, both on the fringes of the Altstadt). The main bus station is in front of the train station, although most services also stop on Mirabellplatz, nearer the centre. Salzburg's airport is 3km west of the centre on the Innsbrucker Bundesstrasse (bus #77 runs in to Sudtirolerplatz every 30min between 5.30am and 11pm).
