Tournai's train station is on the northern edge of the town about 600m from the river. The tourist office at Vieux MarchA©-aux-Poteries 14, opposite the Belfry (Mon-Fri 9am-6pm, Sat 10am-1pm & 3-6pm & Sun 10am-noon & 2-6pm; tel 06922 2045, www.tournai.be ), has a list of hotels . The cheapest are on or around the Grand Place: the De la Tour St-Georges , Place de NA©donchel 2 (tel 06922 5035; A?10-15/$16-24/a?¬18-27) has dowdy but perfectly adequate rooms and is located just behind the Halle aux Draps. Much better - and much more expensive - is the HA?tel d'Alcantara , rue des Bouchers St-Jacques 2 (tel 06921 2648; A?25-30/$40-48/a?¬45-54), a delightful and chic modern hotel slotted in behind an old facade about 400m northwest of the Grand Place. There's also a first-rate HI hostel , centrally placed, about five minutes' walk from the Belfry at rue St-Martin 64 (tel 06921 6136, ajtournai@skynet.be ; A?5-10/$8-16/a?¬9-18; Feb-Dec).

As for food , the Bistro de la CathA©drale , next door to the tourist office at rue Vieux MarchA©-aux-Poteries 15, serves a number of excellent daily specials and is a good spot to try the local speciality, lapin A  la Tournaissienne (rabbit cooked with prunes); La Strada , rue de l'Yser 2, is an extremely popular Italian place serving an inexpensive range of tasty pizzas and pastas; and A la Bonne Franquette , quai MarchA© au Poisson 13a, is a good restaurant serving French food and local specialities (closed Mon). The best bars are strung out along the river on quai MarchA© au Poisson. Try Fabrique at no. 13b for drinks with the local crowd. There's Internet access at CyberCenter , rue Soil de Morialme 6 (Mon-Thurs 11am-11pm, Fri & Sat 11am-late, Sun 2-10.30pm; a?¬5/hr).
