Addresses in Brasilia

Most people in BrasAlia live in superquadras - massive apartment complexes, some of which you can see coming in along the Eixo RodoviA?rio Sul from the airport. Finding out where someone lives or works can seem impossible from the address, but there is an almost perfect internal logic to the system. For example, the address

SQN 208
Bloco H - 304
70000 BrasAlia DF

means superquadra north no. 208, building H, apartment 304. The three-digit superquadra number here (208) gives the location: the first digit represents the position east or west of the Eixo RodoviA?rio, with odd numbers to the west, evens to the east, increasing the further away from the centre you get. The last two digits represent the distance north or south of the Eixo Monumental in streets, so that, for example, SQN 208 is five streets north from SQN 203, SQS 208 five south from SQS 203. Unfortunately, addresses are rarely written out in full: you'll have to watch out for "Q" ( quadra, and often used for superquadra, too), "L", "lj" or "lt" ( loja or lote, meaning "lot" or "shop", used for commercial addresses), "B" or "bl" ( bloco) and "cj" ( conjunto meaning "compound"). The other terms you are most likely to come across are:

Asa Norte/Asa Sul General terms for the two "wings" ( asas) of the city, comprising the avenues Eixo RodoviA?rio Norte and Eixo RodoviA?rio Sul, and the roads running off and parallel to them (the latter lettered "W" to the west, and "L" to the east, eg Avenida W-2 Norte, Avenida L-3 Sul).

SBN/SBS Setor BancA?rio Norte/Sul. The two banking sectors either side of the Eixo Monumental.

SDN/SDS Setor de DiversAµes Norte/Sul. The two shopping centres ( conjuntos) either side of Eixo Monumental.

SEN/SES Setor de Embaixadas Norte/Sul. The embassy sectors, east of the bank sectors.

SHN/SHS Setor Hoteleiro Norte/Sul. The hotel sectors either side of the Eixo Monumental, west of the RodoviA?ria.

SCN/SCS Setor Comercial Norte/Sul. The two commercial office block areas, set back from the Conjuntos de DiversAµes shopping centres. Often confused with CLN/CLS.

SQN/SQS or SHCN/SHCS Superquadras Norte/Sul. The individual superquadras in the main residential wings, Asa Norte and Asa Sul.

CLN/CLS or SCLN/SCLS (Setor) ComAİrcio Local Norte/Sul. These terms describe the shopping blocks which are interspersed throughout the residential superquadras which comprise Asa Norte and Asa Sul. Their numbering follows that of the superquadras, so that CLN 208 is near SQN 208.

SHIN/SHIS Setor de HabitaA§Aµes Individuais Norte/Sul. The two peninsulas that jut into Lago ParanoA?, the northern one accessible from the end of Eixo RodoviA?rio Norte, the southern one, also called Lago Sul, connected by bridges from Avenida das NaA§Aµes.
