Nightlife

There's very little nightlife in the commercial centre around Praca XV de Novembro. Instead, people concentrate in the bars and restaurants that spread out along the Beira Mar Norte (or Avenida Rubens de Arruda Ramos as it is officially called), a dual carriageway that skirts the north of the city along reclaimed land starting at the Hercilio Luz bridge. Places move in and out of fashion rapidly and in summer you'll find that the bars - the first two of which are situated virtually under the bridge itself - are either packed solid with wealthy young people or, for no apparent reason, totally empty. Unfortunately the restaurants here aren't particularly good either and are generally expensive, but there is at least a fair choice, which is more than can be said for the commercial centre. Towards the far end of Beira Mar Norte (take any bus which reads "via Beira Mar Norte") there are several worth noting: at no. 1990 on the avenue itself, Sushimasa (closed Tues-Fri lunch & Mon) is a competent Japanese restaurant, and nearby are some reasonable Italian places, the best being La Pergoletta (closed Mon-Fri lunch and Sun evening) at Travessa Carreirao 62. Cold beer and hearty German dishes are available at the Bierplatz at Beira Mar Norte 210 until late into the night. Further north, in the Beira Mar Norte Shopping Center (Mon-Sat 10am-10pm) there are a dozen fast-food outlets including the usual hamburgers and some decent seafood. The best Japanese food on the island is at Miyoshi (Rodovia SC401, km 3.5), located yet further north, in the suburb of Saco Grande; a taxi there will cost around $7. The best times to go are Tuesday and Friday evenings when there's a very reasonably priced por kilo buffet that includes an excellent sushi and sashimi selection - other evenings the restaurant is extremely expensive.
