Foz do Iguacu is certainly no gastronomic paradise, but it's possible to eat well without paying too much. On Rua Marechal Deodoro there are numerous buffet-style por kilo restaurants, and if you're really on a tight budget follow the Ciudad del Este-bound shoppers to dinner.

Antonio Maria , Rua Almirante Barroso 1466 (Galeria Viela). Remarkably authentic - though expensive - Portuguese food. Sun lunch only.

Bier Kastell , Av. Jorge Schimmelpfeng (corner with Rua Marechal Deodoro). A lively beer garden where you can enjoy ice-cold chopp and German-style sausage and other light meals.

Bufalo Branco , Rua Reboucas 530. Upmarket churrascaria.

Churrascaria Bianco , Rua Quintino Bocaiuva 839. Excellent quality all-you-can-eat meals for $6 per person make this popular with visitors and locals alike.

Hotel das Cataratas , Parque Nacional do Iguacu. The only hotel restaurant worth trying. In peak season an excellent buffet lunch of typical Brazilian dishes is available for $18.

Recanto Gaucho , Av. Cataratas, km 15 - near the Brazilian park entrance (tel 045/572-2358 or 572-1694). A favourite Sunday outing for locals: the atmosphere's lively, the meat's excellent and cheap ($5 per person for all you can eat) and the owner (who always dresses in full gaucho regalia) is a real character. Turn up soon after 11am; food is served until 3pm. It's advisable to phone ahead. Closed Dec and Jan.

Restaurante As Portugalios , Av. das Cataratas 569 (tel 045/572-3927). Friendly and attractive place serving excellent Portuguese food at surprisingly reasonable prices. Evenings only.

Restaurante Clube Maringa , Porto Meira (tel 045/527-3472; reservations advised on Sun). Justly popular amongst locals for its superb rodizio de peixe lunch and stunning views of the Iguacu river. Apart from a selection of local freshwater fish, there's an excellent salad bar and you can pay a little extra for some of the freshest sashimi you're likely to come across. Expect to pay $10-15 per person. Take the "Porto Meira" bus and ask for directions, or a taxi ($4).

Trigo & Cia , Rua Almirante Barroso 1750. Adjoining the Hotel Internacional Foz, this busy cafe serves tasty savoury snacks, good coffee and the best cakes in Foz. Open until 11pm.
