Legend has it that, being a remote frontier in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the state of GoiA?s developed an exquisite cuisine in order to prolong the stay of passing travellers. Even today, in GoiA?nia as in GoiA?s Velho, the people are justly proud of their cooking. Local delicacies range from rice with pequi fruit through pasties ( empadAµes) to roast sow with fried banana ( leitA?o assada com banana frita). You may find, however, that the increasing popularity of the self-service comida por kilo system means that it's almost impossible to track down seriously good food at lunchtime unless you're happy dining at the most expensive restaurants. There are, however, a number of reasonable restaurants, lanchonetes and pizzerias around PraA§a TamandarAİ; plus quite a few more lanchonetes around the cheaper hotels in Setor Centro. The basic rule is the further south you go, the more expensive the restaurant.

AnhangA?era , Av. AnhangA?era near the corner with Av. ParanaAba, Setor Central. Next to the Pro Brazilian supermarket, one of the cheapest and busiest lunchtime comida por kilo places.

Buritis , at the corner of Rua 13 with Avenida dos Buritis, over the road from the AssemblAİia Legislativa building, in the Setor Central. Excellent choice of foods for self-service comida por kilo consumption. Mon-Sat lunchtimes only.

DragA?o , Rua Maria Cruvinel 1111 (tel 062/215-1442). Just off Av. RepA?blica do LAbano on the south side of PraA§a TamandarAİ, good Chinese food, better in the evenings and weekends when the comida por kilo system makes way for old-fashioned A  la carte. Home-delivery service for the truly lazy.

Ki-sabor , Rua 3, #67. Budget but very pleasant comida por kilo restaurant open for lunches; get there by 1.30pm to be sure of a good choice of dishes.

A Peixisqueira , PraA§a Walter Santos 164, Setor Coimbra (tel 062/233-9333). Hard to beat for moderately priced fish-based cuisine, but you will need to take a taxi to get here (it's west beyond the Jardim ZoolA?gico).

Piquiras , Av. RepA?blica do LAbano 1758, Setor Oeste (tel 062/223-8168). One of the city's better all-round restaurants, always good quality; there's a restaurant inside and a large terrace restaurant-bar open to the road.

Sabor TradiA§A?o , Rua 74, #194, Setor Central. Close to the corner with Rua 55, one of a number of good lunchtime comida por kilo places in the centre (closed Sun).

Tacho do Cobre , Rua 72, #550, Jardim GoiA?s (tel 062/242-1241). Located in an outer suburb to the southeast of the centre (take a taxi), this expensive restaurant serves the very best local dishes.

Tropeiro Chopera e Restaurante , Rua 10. Located just off the western edge of PraA§a TamandarAİ and open evenings only, this popular, moderately priced restaurant has a great atmosphere whether you're just drinking or having a meal. This is a good place to try mandioca frita (fried manioc).

Vegetariano , Rua 7, #475, Centro (tel 062/225-7290). Simple, well-presented vegetarian dishes.
