Restaurants are one of Natal's strongest points, and the regional cuisine has, if anything, been strengthened by the influx of Brazilian tourists, as many see eating Northeastern food as an important part of their holiday.

Bar do CaA§A?o , on the seafront near the fort. Good oyster and shellfish dishes.

Carne de Sol Benigna Lira , Rua Dr JosAİ Augusto Bezerra de Menezes 9, Praia dos Artistas (tel 084/202-3914). The speciality of this moderately priced restaurant is sun-dried meat, as good as you'll find anywhere in Brazil.

Casa da MA?e , Rua Pedro Afonso 230, PetrA?polis. The speciality here is galinha cabidela, chicken stewed in a sauce enriched by its own blood and giblets. The giblets are sieved out before serving, and it's delicious and inexpensive.

Chaplin , Av. Presidente CafAİ Filho 27 (tel 084/211-7457). Somewhat overpriced international restaurant set on the Praia dos Artistas.

O CrustA?ceo , Rua Apodi 414 (tel 084/222-1122). Excellent, inexpensive seafood in unpretentious surroundings right in the city centre.

MacrobiA?tica , Rua Princesa Isabel 528 (tel 084/222-6765). As the name suggests, a macrobiotic restaurant, in the centre of Natal. Mon-Sat 11am-2pm.

Saborosa , Av. Campos Sales 609, PetrA?polis (tel 084/222-7338). Inexpensive restaurant serving an excellent range of regional food by the kilo.

SamA? , Av. Miguel de Castro 1329, Lagoa Nova (tel 084/234-3666). Yet another very special seafood restaurant, with delicious lobsters. Some French cuisine too.
