Most of Natal's nocturnal action takes place on or around the beaches rather than in the centre. One good spot to head for is Praia dos Artistas , the stretch of beach about halfway between the fort and the headland, which hosts plenty of live music at night, especially on weekends. Coconut specializes in MPB, while Bar do Caranquejo has forro on Fridays and Saturdays.

If all you want to do is sip a caipirinha and watch the sun set, a good place is the Canto do Mangue on the banks of the Rio Potengi: it's a taxi ride away near the municipal fish market in the bairro of Ribeira , where Rua Coronel Flaminio runs into Rua Sao Joao. It's also one of the best places to eat fish in the city: a speciality is fresh fish fried and served in tapioca with coconut sauce ( peixe ao molho de tapioca). Be warned, however, that Ribeira can be a fairly rough neighbourhood, especially at night, so it's best to take a taxi there and back.

For good live music head for Forro com Turista, in the Centro de Turismo, Rua Aderbal de Figueiredo 980, Petropolis (tel 084/211-6218; Thurs from 9pm). The Kapital Eurodance, at Praia do Meio, has a varying programme throughout the week, ending in excellent live pagode on Sunday nights.
