Alternatively, your consulate should have a list of professionals who speak an appropriate language. The Herald Tribune and Miami Herald are the two most easily available English-language newspapers in Rio, and Time, Newsweek and the Economist are all readily available. The Jornal do Brasil and O Globo are Rio's two main newspapers, while the weekly news magazine Veja features a useful Veja Rio insert, listing and reviewing cultural events in the city.

Police Emergency number tel 190. The beach areas have police posts located at regular intervals. The special Tourist Police are located at Avenida AfrA?nio de Melo Franco (opposite the Teatro Casa Grande), Leblon (tel 021/511-5112, 511-5767 & 690-3560); they are very helpful, speak English and efficiently process reports of theft or other incidents.
