Personal safety: A warning

Salvador has more of a problem with robberies and muggings than anywhere else in the Northeast save Recife. The main tourist area around Pelourinho is heavily policed until quite late at night and is consequently safe. However, the fact that such a large police presence is needed suggests that some precautions are still in order. Don't wander down ill-lit sidestreets at night unless you are within sight of a policeman and don't use the Lacerda elevator after early evening. You should also avoid walking up and down the winding roads which connect the Cidade Alta and the Cidade Baixa, and you should be careful about using ordinary city buses on Sundays when there are few people around; the executivo bus is always a safe option. Give the Avenida do Contorno - the seafront road that runs north from the harbour past the Solar do Unhao restaurant - a miss too. It's a shame to put it out of bounds as it's a very scenic walk, but it's dangerous even in daylight as gangs lie in wait for tourists who don't know any better; if you want to go to the restaurant, or the Museu de Arte Moderna near it, take a taxi.
