Banks and exchange There are several places where you can change money in the Pelourinho area, including OlAmpio Turismo on Largo do Cruzeiro de SA?o Francisco and Vert-Tour on Rua das Laranjeiras. You'll get lower, but still reasonable, rates for dollars cash and travellers' cheques at the smarter beach hotels in Ondina and Pituba. On no account change on the street, especially around the Lacerda elevator. Banco do Brasil has branches, all with Visa ATMs, at Av. Sete de Setembro 254 in Cidade Alta, Av. The most popular, Bahia, have a tradition of playing open, attacking football in the best Brazilian tradition. The biggest matches take place on Sunday afternoons in the EstA?dio OtA?vio Mangabeira, close to the centre; take the bus marked "NazarAİ" from Campo Grande, or it's a short taxi ride. Shopping The main place for artesanato is the Mercado Modelo in Cidade Baixa. Good, cheap leatherwork is available from the street stalls of Barroquinha, the steep street leading downhill just before PraA§a Castro Alves; and clothes and shoes can be found in the commercial area further down. For luxury items, clothes, books, CDs and food, head for either Shopping Barra or Iguatemi Shopping. Projecto AxAİ, Rua das Laranjeiras 22, sells great, colourful clothing - the money from which goes to support street kids. For films and camera equipment, try Fotografa, Rua Chile 10, Fotosystem, Rua Chile 4, or Minilab, on the corner of Rua Chile and Rua do Tiro ChapAİn. International calls can be made direct with phone cards from almost any phone kiosk in Salvador.
