City transport

Motorcycle taxis, or motos , are the most convenient way of getting around the city and are inexpensive. Expect to pay 500-1000r for a short hop, or up to 2000r for a longer journey. Prices go up after dark - a 500r surcharge is fair, but drivers will invariably ask for more. You can also hire a moto-driver for a day - explain to the driver exactly where you want to go and negotiate a price beforehand. A good English-speaker will charge around $7 per day for his services as driver and guide. If you're not in a hurry, cyclos are handy for short trips. Fares are subject to negotiation, usually between 500r and 1000r.

A number of useful bus services connect the city with the suburbs and beyond. Ho Wah Genting operates buses along National Routes 1, 2, 4 and 5 daily, leaving from the southwest corner of the central market. You can jump on or off anywhere along the route; wave the bus down to get on, and to get off, just shout at the driver. The fare varies, depending on distance, but is usually 1000-3000r; tickets are bought on board.

Taxis are not hailed on the street - you can either book them over the phone or pick one up at Monivong Boulevard near the central market, where they tend to gather. Negotiate the fare in advance. Taxis are also available for hire for the day: you can expect to pay around $20-25, excluding petrol. Most hotels and guesthouses also have cars with driver available.
