Unfortunately, cultural events in Phnom Penh are few and far between. The ancient tradition of Cambodian classical dance , which originated in the twelfth century, was all but wiped out in the 1970s. It is slowly beginning to resurface, but lack of funding means that performances at the Chaktomuk Theatre on Sisowath Quay are infrequent - check the listings in the Friday edition of the Cambodia Daily. The theatre is also the venue for occasional Khmer plays and musical shows .

If you're in Phnom Penh during one of the big festivals, there may be a live Khmer pop music concert at the Olympic Stadium. Tickets are reasonably priced, so it's worth popping along for an hour or two to see Cambodia's answer to Tom Jones.

A popular Phnom Penh Sunday-afternoon outing is a trip to the kick-boxing . Much like Muay Thai, it's a no-holds-barred experience, but the crowds tend to be more subdued than at the average Bangkok event. It's a snip at 2000r for the stands, 3000r for ringside. Moto-drivers will know where to go (ask for "boxer" or "gay-laa bpra-dul") or head straight to the Ministry of Women's and Veteran's Affairs on Street 169 and follow the crowds. The fun is usually over by 5 or 6pm, depending on the number of KO's.

You can see films at the International Youth Club (Daun Penh Street, West of Wat Phnom; tel 023/722722) in the evenings. Admission is free and non-members are welcome. The French Cultural Centre (Street 184, just east of Monivong) screens French films with English subtitles. Check local listings for details. There's a very small cineplex at 262 Monivong Blvd, playing mainly Western and Chinese action movies, or select your own laser disc movie at Movie Street Video Centre, 116 Sihanouk Blvd, and watch it in their comfortable screening rooms for $5.

For most Khmers, nightlife centres around an early evening meal out, followed by a tuneful burst of karaoke. The southern end of Monivong Boulevard has a particular concentration of the larger, glitzy joints, but KTV can be found all over town. Just follow your ears. Western nightlife tastes are more than catered for, and an oversupply of bars and clubs means that many are less than full, especially during the low season. However, you'll always find a crowd in established favourites such as FCC , Heart of Darkness, Sharky and Martini.
