Siem Reap boasts a huge selection of restaurants catering to tourist tastes, but if you want something more authentic, it's best to head for the markets and the cheap stalls on the eastern side of the river, near Route 6. In the evenings, more impromptu stalls set up all over town, with the culinary epicentre being the night market. Out at the temples, you're never far from food, although the choice is a bit limited, and the prices reflect their location. Restaurants in Siem Reap tend to open for breakfast and stay open until around 11pm.

71 Welcome , east bank of the river, north of Route 6. Cheap local food at this riverside eatery, with plenty of dishes for under a dollar.

Arun , a few doors down from 71 Welcome. Reasonable food, great service, and a handy spot to listen to the Khmer music wafting across the river from the nightly traditional dancing at the nearby Grand HA?tel d'Angkor.

Apsara , near junction of Route 6 and Sivatha Street. Cheap Khmer food, popular with the local moto set.

Bayon , one block east of the river, south of Route 6 (tel 012/855219). It's a good idea to book a table during peak season at this popular, atmospheric garden restaurant. Good-value Khmer and Western dishes are priced $1-3, and there's an extensive wine list.

Bayon II , one block east of the river, north of Route 6. Owned by the extended family of Bayon Restaurant fame with a similar standard of good food, but more geared up for tour groups, so less authentic ambience.

Chivit Thai , opposite Bayon. More than just the usual Thai and Khmer menu at a reasonable $2-4. Relaxed veranda, Thai-style seating.

Continental CafAŠ , Rasmei Angkor, on the river, near Old Market. Sophisticated European chic at sophisticated European prices. Good selection of Western meals and drinks. Happy hour 5-8pm includes Tiger draught for $1.

Green House , junction of Sivatha Street and Route 6. A good selection of Chinese, Khmer, Thai and European cuisine for around $2, served in an atmospheric garden setting. Vegetarian menu available.

Hawaii , on the riverbank, north of Bayon hotel. Fantastic food at a good price, mixed up by the ex-chef of the FCC in Phnom Penh. Cambodian cuisine, Italian and salads are all on the menu. Free pool table.

Kampuchino , near Old Market. High-class pizza and pasta joint near the river with main courses at $3-5.

Koulen , Sivatha Street, near police station. Pleasant, modern Khmer restaurant with good food. Cheap breakfasts priced in riels, main courses cost from $3. Guides often bring people here for lunch.

Little India , north of Old Market. Popular curry house with the full selection of lassis.

Monorom , Sivatha Street, north of night market. Khmer restaurant with limited menu but good food. Try the round fried egg for breakfast, or the frog specials. Closes at 9pm.

Only One , Old Market. This restaurant serving Western food used to be the only one in Siem Reap. Main courses cost $5-6.

Sampheap , near the river, south of Route 6. A mix of tour groups and local visitors enjoying Khmer foods from $2 to $5 at this riverside location.

Sawasdee Food Garden , one block east of the river, north of Route 6. Fantastic Thai food in a relaxed garden setting. Dishes around $1-4.

Singapore Asian , north of Old Market. A popular place serving Western and Asian dishes for $1-3 in a relaxing roof-top garden. Service, however, leaves a lot to be desired.

Thai San Mao , north of Old Market. Some cheap rice and noodle dishes, but most dishes $3-4. Offers a good selection of pizzas.
