Nanaimo's bus terminal (tel 753-4371) is some way from the harbour on the corner of Comox and Terminal, with six daily runs to Victoria, two to Port Hardy and three or four to Port Alberni, for connections to Tofino and Ucluelet. BC Ferries (tel 386-3431 or 1-888/223-3779) sail to and from Departure Bay, 2km north of downtown (take the Hammond Bay bus #2 to the north end of Stewart Ave), to Tsawwassen (south of Vancouver) and more frequently to Horseshoe Bay on the mainland (summer hourly 7am-9pm; off-season every 2hr; foot passengers $9 one-way, cars $32; cheaper in low season). Another newer terminal, Duke Point, which will take increasing numbers of ferries, operates just to the south of the town. The town lies on the Victoria-Courtenay line and sees two trains daily, northbound around 11am and southbound at 3pm: the station is in the centre of downtown.

You'll find a typically overstocked infocentre at Beban House, 2290 Bowen Rd (May-Sept daily 8am-8pm; Oct-April Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; tel 756-0106 or 1-800/663-7337, www.tourism.nanaimo.bc.ca ). They'll phone around and help with accommodation referrals, and shower you with pamphlets on the town and the island as a whole. There are also details of the many boat rides and tours you can make to local sawmills, canneries, nature reserves and fishing research stations.
