Moncton's bus station is about 1km west of Tidal Bore Park, at 961 Main St. SMT buses arrive here from most major settlements in New Brunswick and they also operate two buses daily to and from PEI's Charlottetown; SMT and Acadian Bus Lines combine to link Moncton with Halifax in Nova Scotia. Moncton's train station is nearby - behind the Eaton Centre, a couple of blocks further west along Main Street - with services running to Halifax and Montreal. Moncton's main tourist office is in the gleamingly modern City Hall, at 655 Main St (Sept-May Mon-Fri 9am-5pm; June-Aug 8.30am-8pm; tel 853-3590). They'll book accommodation for no charge, provide free city maps and give information on forthcoming events.

Moncton has a good supply of convenient accommodation . Amongst several downtown hotels , the Delta Beausejour , at 750 Main St (tel 854-4344 or 1-800/268-1133; $80-100), is the most lavish, a big modern high-rise bang in the middle of town, though the motel-style rooms of the much more modest Rodd Parkhouse Inn , beside Tidal Bore Park at 434 Main St (tel 382-1664 or 1-800/565-7633; $60-80), are perfectly adequate if rather routine. Alternatively, several pleasant B&Bs are dotted amongst the leafy residential avenues to the north of Main Street. The pick of the bunch is the Bonaccord House , 250 Bonaccord St (tel 388-1535, fax 853-7191; $40-60), north of the bus station in an attractive Victorian villa with picket fence and portico. A good reserve is the gracious Park View, beside the park to the north of Main Street's Eaton Centre at 254 Cameron St (tel 382-4504; $40-60).

For food , Le Chateau a Pape , 2 Steadman St (tel 855-7273), serves the finest of Acadian cuisine from its premises in a big old house a couple of minutes' walk west along the river bank from Tidal Bore Park. Less expensive places include Rye's Deli & Pub , 785 Main St, where the bagels and the daily specials are excellent, and the Cafe Robinson , off Main Street at 187 Robinson St, for quality snacks and coffee. Jean's Diner , 369 St George St, about three blocks north of Main Street, is worth a trip at lunch time for its clams. Bars throng the centre - try the popular Pump House Brewpub , at 7 Orange Lane, just off Main Street a few metres east of City Hall.
