St Andrews is accessible by SMT bus from Saint John (1 daily; 1hr 30min) and passengers are dropped on Water Street, a couple of blocks east of the pier. The tourist office is on Hwy 127 as you enter the town (May to late Oct daily 9am-8pm; tel 529-3556). They issue free tide tables and town maps, supply information on local bicycle hire, have the schedule for visits to Minister's Island, and will happily help you with accommodation, though advance bookings are a good idea during the height of the season. Most illustrious of all the hotels is the Algonquin (tel 529-8823 or 1-800/441-1414; $80 and up), a sprawling and well-equipped resort complex whose turrets and gables, dating from 1915, dominate the northwest of town, about 1.5km from the waterfront on Prince of Wales Street. Even more unusual - and almost in the shadow of the Algonquin - is the Pansy Patch B&B , 59 Carleton St (tel 529-3834 or 1-888/726-7972; $125-175/$175-240; June-Oct), where nine quaint guestrooms, each with a sea view, occupy a charming country home, built in a variation of the French Normandy style in 1912; the food here is excellent too and the garden is beautiful. Other less expensive B&Bs within a few minutes' walk of the pier include the Hanson House , in a trim and well-cared-for old house at 62 Edward St (tel 529-4947; $40-60; May-Oct); the Harris Hatch Inn , 142 Queen St (tel 529-4713; $80-100; May-Oct), in an elegant, broadly Georgian mansion with shutters, fanlight and Neoclassical columns; and the Garden Gate , whose wide verandas and lovely garden are in a quiet part of town at 364 Montague St (tel 529-4453; $80-100; June-Oct). The St Andrews Motor Inn , 111 Water St (tel 529-4571; $100-125), is a spick-and-span modern motel on the seashore. The popular Passamaquoddy Park Campground (tel 529-3439; May-Oct) has a great seaside location just over 1km east of the town centre along Water Street.

St Andrews has an excellent range of cafAŠs and the occasional good restaurant . The Chef's CafAŠ , 180 Water St, offers reasonably priced fish platters as part of a wide-ranging menu and occupies an old-fashioned diner decked out with all sorts of retro bits and bobs. Nearby, the inexpensive Gables Restaurant Bar & Patio , 143 Water St (tel 529-3440), is a funky little place, serving tasty food from its bayshore location, while the Lobster Bay Eatery, just along the street at no. 113 (tel 529-4840), is a family-oriented restaurant offering up delicious lobsters - though many regular visitors swear by the lobsters at the Algonquin. For a special meal in fairly formal surroundings, head for L'Europe Dining Room , an expensive restaurant at 48 King St (tel 529-3818).
