By sheer weight of numbers, the day-trippers set the gastronomic tone in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but one or two good cafAŠs and restaurants have survived the deluge to offer tasty meals and snacks.

Epicurean , 84 Queen St. Inexpensive but good cafAŠ food with a Mediterranean slant. Vegetarian options offered most days.

Oban Inn , 160 Front St (tel 905/468-2165). This hotel restaurant is smart and comparatively formal and the food - steak, salmon and so forth - is reliably good.

Olde Angel Inn , 224 Regent St just off Queen St. With its low-beamed ceilings and flagstone floors, this is the town's most atmospheric pub, serving a first-rate range of draught beers as well as filling bar snacks.

Shaw CafAŠ and Wine Bar , 92 Queen St at Victoria. Arguably the best place in town, this cafAŠ-restaurant caters for theatre-goers (rather than day-trippers). An inventive, wide-ranging menu features everything from pasta dishes through to salmon fillets, all at very reasonable prices. Closes 8pm.
