The best places to eat are in Little Suomi, at and around Bay and Algoma streets, where you can sample tasty Finnish food in healthy portions (but note that most places here close early). There is a cluster of blue-collar bars on Cumberland Street, just up from the Pagoda.

Armando's , 28 Cumberland St N at Red River Rd (tel 344-5833). Trim Italian restaurant offering good pizzas, pastas and more. Reasonable prices. Closed Sun.

Hoito Restaurant , 314 Bay St at Algoma. Established in 1918, Thunder Bay's best-known Finnish cafe-cum-canteen is always full and the specials on the board should not be missed. The salt fish, potatoes and viili (clabbered milk) is delicious and costs just $7. Open Mon-Fri 7am-8pm, Sat & Sun 8am-8pm.

Kangas Sauna , 379 Oliver Rd (tel 344-6761). Previously a small counter service for the sauna users, now a larger cafe-restaurant with delicious home-made soups, omelettes and sweet berry pies. On the edge of Little Suomi. Open daily 7.30am-11pm.

The Office , 16 Cumberland St at Red River. Dark and steamy bar that bills itself as the Home of the Blues. Features frequent live blues bands of variable quality.

Scandinavian Homemade Cafe , 147 Algoma S at Bay. A friendly, cosy cafe with full breakfasts for $7 and delicious Finnish pancakes. Open Mon-Sat 7am-4pm.
