Toronto now has two
area codes
, tel 416 and tel 647, the latter reserved for phone numbers created after March 1, 2001. Since the area code split is not based on distinct city areas, all local telephone calls now require that you dial a ten-digit number. Most of the Toronto phone numbers in the
