The inconsequential iron-mining town of
WAWA
, just 14km north of the park, was named after the Ojibwa word for the cry of the Canadian goose - and to hammer home the point there's a great big steel model of the bird at the entrance to town. The model has helped to make Wawa a busy stopping point on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 17), which was just the idea. In the 1960s, much to the chagrin of local businessfolk, the TCH was routed a couple of kilometres to the west of town - hence the goose to pull passing motorists in.
Modern

line up along Wawa's main drag, Mission Road. Amongst them, two good choices are the well-kept, two-storey
